Rosenzweig, Franz
(1886-1929)
   German theolo-gian. He was born in Kassel. He studied at various universities, and eventually considered convert-ing to Christianity. After attending an Orthodox high holy day service in Berlin, he embraced Judaism. Later he served in the German army, and he wrote Star of Redemption while confined to military hospitals in Leipzig and Belgrade. After returning home he established an institute for Jewish studies, the Freies Jildisches Lehrhaus, in Frankfurt am Main. In 1921 he became partially paralysed, but he continued to write. Together with Martin Buber he translated the Hebrew Scriptures into German.
